Community Gardens Coordinator

This summer student position coordinates all aspects of the North Central Community Gardens including volunteer management, educational workshops, resident engagement and community development. You must be a post-secondary student returning to school in the Fall of 2017 in order to be eligible for this position; if you are not a returning student your application will not be considered due to funding conditions for this position.

The Organization

North Central Community Association has been a leader in community development since the mid 1970s. As one of Regina’s most active community associations, it represents some of the most diverse population in the city today. Although economic and social inequalities still continue, North Central has risen above its adversity to become leader in social and economic reform.

Position is available for students at least 15 years of age, legally entitled to work in Canada, is enrolled, at the time of employment, at a secondary or post‐secondary school or institution, and returning to full‐time studies after the period of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Volunteer management: recruit and organize volunteers to care for the gardens
  • Engaging residents and encourage them to use the gardens
  • Community and resident food distribution
  • Distributing information about the gardens
  • Garden maintenance
  • Coordinating community partnerships
  • Planning summer community celebrations
  • Planning harvest activities and celebrations
  • Researching and maintaining culturally significant plants
  • Liaising with elders and cultural community leaders
  • Working in an outdoor environment
  • Reporting

Qualifications

  • Good written and verbal communication skills to a diverse audience
  • Possess valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of food gardening
  • Knowledge of North Central neighbourhoood and services is an asset
  • Group facilitation experience is an asset
  • Be able to do physical labour including lifting 40 lbs safely, bending and kneeling
  • Use of Microsoft Office especially Word and Excel
  • Standard First Aid – CPR and FoodSafe are an asset

Employment Type: Temporary full-time with an average of 37 hours per week

Remuneration: $15.00/hr

Hours: 37 hours per week including some evenings and weekends

Duration: May 15 to August 31, 2017

Renew Project Coordinator

The Renew Project Coordinator will be responsible for implementing the Renew Project’s strategy of:
1. Educating residents and property owners about property crimes and reporting process.
2. Engaging residents in taking pride in the physical environment of the neighbourhood through volunteer events.
3. Providing service for victims of vandalism by removing or repairing damage by working with offenders and community volunteers.

  • Coordinating community work-bees to clean up graffiti and garbage on selected North Central city blocks.
  • Monthly written reports for funders and board of directors
  • Recruiting and supervising community volunteers
  • Coordinate annual community clean-up event with over 100 volunteers.
  • Supervise Summer Student assistant

Qualifications

  • Be able to do physical labour including lifting heavy equipment, bending and kneeling
  • Experience with community development and crime prevention
  • Experience with exterior painting and graffiti removal an asset
  • Experience with landscaping, lawn care and trimming trees
  • Experience teaching and working with children and adults
  • Experience with surveying and interviewing public
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Understanding of North Central neighbourhood an asset

Employment Type: Temporary full-time Tuesday to Saturday with an average of 35 hours per week

Remuneration: $16.00/hr

Hours: Flexible hours with an average of 35 hours/week, Tuesday-Saturday

Duration: June 1, 2017 to August 31, 2017

Renew Project Summer Student Assistant

The North Central Community Association is looking for a Renew Project Assistant.  The position will be responsible for assisting the Renew Project coordinator in:
1. Educating residents and property owners about property crimes and reporting process.

  • Compiling survey data
  • Distributing promotional materials and flyers
  • Assisting planning of community work-bees to do minor yard work, clean up graffiti and garbage on selected North Central city blocks
  • Assisting Coordinator with various duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Full-Time Post-Secondary Student studying Social Work, Community Development, Justice Studies or related field.
  • Interest in community development and crime prevention
  • Strong organizational skills and experience working with Microsoft Office esp. Word and Excel
  • Be able to do physical labor including to safely lift 50 lbs., bending and kneeling
  • Experience with surveying and interviewing public
  • Be able to work well with businesses, artists, volunteers and community members.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
  • Understanding of North Central neighborhood an asset

Employment Type: Temporary part-time Tuesday to Saturday with an average of 30 hours per week

Remuneration: $14.00/hour

Duration: June 1, 2017-August 31, 2017 and one day for the Community Clean up event in September
